The First Step – Faith

Step one in feeling God’s presence may be pretty obvious. I suppose it was more obvious centuries ago or at certain points during history, and perhaps less so in today’s post-modern society. Regardless, this truth remains. To feel and become aware of God’s presence and impact on your life, you have to believe He exists.

The Apostle Paul said it this way “ is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.” (Herbrews 11:6 NLT).

If you connected to this course because you aren’t sure yet if God is real, that’s okay. Or, maybe you were sure but something happened that made you doubt it is possible for there to BE a real God. That’s okay, too. I’m not in your shoes and not feeling what you feel, but I know what it means to struggle to believe that God would do things for me personally. I know what it means to feel like “a number” with God. I realize seasons of doubt are absolutely, totally normal. So, what I’d ask you in this introductory email is this: Can you put yourself in a mindset where you are willing to become willing to believe He exists?

If you are, that IS a step of faith. And, that step of faith, however small, is pleasing to God. And the fact that you are willing to consider that He exists and the possibility that He is good puts you in the category of a truth seeker. And He will reward you for seeking Him.

If you signed up for this email series, that also was a step of faith, even if your conscious thought at the time was “let’s see how full of crap this guy is….”. It was still a step. God watches those steps carefully. They have great meaning.

So, even if you are unconvinced consciously. Let me ask you to be willing to experience what this little email series has for you. Would you be willing to read the rest of the series, take a few simple steps and see what happens?

If so, I have great faith that the God that inspired me to write this is going to follow through on His plan for you.

By the way, if you are a Christian who feels disconnected from God or the church, let me encourage you. No matter how far away you feel, He still loves you. He is still there and His presence is still available to you. Even if you cursed Him. Even if you ran away.

David, you know, the big shot old testament king of Israel anointed by God but still quite fond of the ladies, said this after murdering his mistresses husband (yeah, its in the Bible – its not all rules and lists – for more of the story click HERE):

7 I can never escape from your Spirit!
I can never get away from your presence!
8 If I go up to heaven, you are there;
if I go down to the grave,[a] you are there.
9 If I ride the wings of the morning,
if I dwell by the farthest oceans,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
and your strength will support me.
11 I could ask the darkness to hide me
and the light around me to become night—
12 but even in darkness I cannot hide from you.
To you the night shines as bright as day.
Darkness and light are the same to you.
– Psalm 139: 7-12

David’s point was simple. No matter what, God was with him. When you are His child, He won’t leave you and, despite your best efforts, you can’t leave Him. It simply isn’t possible.

I invite you to open your heart to the possibility that God has a plan for Your life and that His plan is good, that it is better than your plan and that you will be happier doing things His way.

Does that mean I have to be a Christian robot? No! That’s the last thing He wants.

The best life He has for you is still available, no matter what your circumstances are today.

I ask you today to think about the possibility that Faith will bring you closer to Him.

Thanks for reading this introductory email – look for the next one in the series in a day or two. Until then, I dare you to pray and ask Him to reveal His presence to you. God is on His own timetable, but your request will be heard and answered, sooner or later.
